Step Into Work
Iconic Steps & Creative Sparkworks have partnered on Step Into Work, a film-making programme providing hand-on, practical skills training as well as support to develop personal and professional resilience.
Who are Iconic Steps & Creative Sparkworks?
Iconic Steps is a social enterprise that supports young people from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds to enter the media industry through working with industry partners e.g Disney, Netflix and Warner Bros. They champion a holistic approach to each young person’s development, – in addition to industry-specific training, mentoring and practical experience on ‘real projects’, their beneficiaries attend life skills workshops e.g. resilience, personal finance and CV writing.
Creative Sparkworks is a charity that exists to support creative minds and talent from under-represented young people facing barriers to employment, in-work poverty and/or educational non- attainment. They nurture their first spark of interest and ambition with hands-on free technical and employability skills training led by practising industry professionals. Underpinned with mentoring from inspirational industry practitioners, they source London Living Wage paid work for their trainees through established links in the industry eg. BBC Studios, X-Factor and Netflix.
What is the Step Into Work programme?
Step into Work will provide training and career opportunities in film-making for 70 talented young people. If you take part you will get hands-on filmmaking, camera, audio, lighting, editing and screen-writing training. You will also get hands-on training with industry professionals, help to identify and secure paid work opportunities in film and TV, and the opportunity to widen your network base and build a peer-to-peer support system to help build your personal and professional resilience.
The training strands will include learning to use industry-standard equipment, general film-making skills, but also sector-specific skills where we know there are skills gaps at the moment. For example learning skills specifically related to roles like Production Secretaries, Post Production Assistants, Production Assistants, Editors, Animators, VFX trainees, Covid Runners, Green Stewards, Assistant Location Managers, Location Marshals.
What will you gain from Step Into Work?
You’ll get a chance to explore documentary production, music video production and commercial production. You will have the option to complete either a 20-week pathfinder filmmaking and employability skills with paid work placements course at 2 days per week, or an Industry Filmmaking intensive 5 day training course.
